Group Surfing Lessons
What to expect
Surfing instructions from the absolute beginner to the
intermediate, to the surfer who wants to fine tune their
surfing all the way to the competitive surfer. Our expert,
totally qualified instructors are extremely friendly,
patient and will teach you:
Surf Safety and Ocean awareness - currents
& rips, rocks & reefs, sandbanks & gutters
- How to use the ocean for surfing
- Stretching and Fitness - Basic
stretching for maximum surfing
- Better Paddling Skills - How to
optimize getting around in the surf on your board
- Wave Selection & Timing -
Which are the good waves to go for to catch the wave
- Stand up and Surfing the Waves
- How to get to your feet quick and stay there
- Turning, Trimming, Speed and Power
- How to get you and your surfboard moving along the
wave
- Surf Rules (etiquette) - Road Rules
in the waves to keep everyone happy
- Rescue Signals - Get Help for yourself,
or give help to someone in need.
When can you go?
- Lessons are conducted 7 days a week at 9am,
11am and 1pm.
- Please contact us about
our 2, 3, and 5 day packages.
Equipment Provided
- Everything is provided, safe surfboards, wetsuits,
rash shirts, sunscreen
- The best, most personalised instruction.
Special Considerations
- Participants must be able to swim.
You need to Bring
- swimmers
- towel
- O’Brien Guides advise not to bring valuables
such as: passports, valuable jewellery or large sums
of cash.

What to expect
Highest
quality tuition provided by Steve Foreman, the longest
serving local coach, also one of the pioneers of surf
coaching in Australia.
About Steve
After many years of surf coaching, Steve
still enjoys passing on his knowledge to many aspiring
young surfers. Steve's unique style is sought after
by learners through to champions like Layne
Beachley, Pauline Menczer
and James Wood. Other world class
surfers benefiting from Steve's special coaching
gift are Trudy Todd, Jock Barnes, Beau Walker, Adam
Melling, Josh Fuller, Brad Wilcox and Angela Keighran.
The son of well respected swim coach, Mona Foreman,
he started coaching alongside his mum from an early
age. That was over 30 years ago.
Steve enjoyed 10 years as head coach with NSW Department
of Sport and Recreation at Lennox Head where he
developed and ran 'Learn to Surf' programmes for
kids.
Personalised tuition is Steve's preferred method
of coaching, ensuring maximum enjoyment and satisfaction
of coach and surfer while meeting the varying needs
of individual surfers.
Steve is currently Regional Director of Coaching for
Far North Coast Surfing Association and is one of
only two licenced personalised surf coaches in the
Byron Shire.
When can you go?
- Lesson duration is 2 hours and are available Saturdays,
Sundays, Mondays
or Tuesdays from 7am - 9am
during NSW School semesters.
- NSW School holidays - available anytime 7 days
a week.
- Be an Early Bird: 7am-9am to ensure you: beat
the heat, get best conditions, beat the crowds
Equipment Provided
Personalised Tuition (Beginners) - soft board, wetsuit,
transportation to and from beach
- A Certificate of Accomplishment will be awarded
at the completion of lesson.
Special Considerations
- Participants must be able to swim.
You need to Bring
- swimmers
- towel
- "slip, slop, slap"
- bottled water
- Elite coaching: please bring your
own board and wetsuit.
