Ocean Kayaking
What can you expect?
Each adventure takes three hours and includes:
- An introductory talk from your guide about what
you can expect from your adventure, including instruction
on how to paddle, ocean conditions, and marine life.
- A fun time on the waters surrounding Cape Byron,
Australia's most eastern point. A lot of people walk
the Cape during their visit to Byron Bay, but it is
a spectacular view from the water!
- The unique opportunity to encounter the wild dolphins
and other wildlife of Byron Bay
(such as sea turtles and birds of prey) from the comfort
of your own kayak.
- A stop for tea and biscuits at one of the sensational
beaches fringing Cape Byron.
When can you go?
- Summer: Two adventures each day,
seven days a week!
Morning: 9am - 12noon Afternoon: 2pm - 5 pm
- Winter: One adventure each day
at 11am - 2pm.
- Weather permitting
Equipment Provided
- All equipment and instruction is supplied.
- Kayak’s are very stable two-person, sit-on-top
kayaks.
- Every Ocean Kayaking guest is fitted out with a
helmet, life vest, and wetsuit.
Special considerations
Fitness
- As a general rule of thumb, if you can happily walk
to the lighthouse in Byron Bay, then you can easily
handle our trip.
- Ability to swim - The ability to
swim is not necessary, but if you are unable to swim
please ensure you advise your guide.
- Medical Conditions - Please advise
O’Brien Guides about any medical conditions
you have which may compromise your ability to successfully
take part in a Ocean Kayaking adventure. Eg asthma,
epilepsy, pregnancy or any heart conditions that may
be exacerbated when involved in physical activity
(see O’Brien
Guides Terms and Conditions)
- Age Restrictions - Participants
must be eight years old minimum if accompanied by
an adult or 14 if unaccompanied.
You Need to Bring
- Hat, sunglasses, towel, sunscreen and a dry change
of clothes for after the trip.
- All valuables are locked securely, as is the rest
of your gear such as bags, towels, clothes, footwear,
etc.
- We advises that all items taken onto the water will
get wet, and cannot be held responsible for malfunction
of the item due to this.
- O’Brien Guides advise not to bring valuables
such as: passports, valuable jewellery or large sums
of cash.

Heads)
What to Expect
River
Kayaking operates on the Brunswick River under Mt.
Chincogan and the Doon Doon River under Mt. Warning.
The rivers, located in northern New South Wales between
Byron Bay and Tweed Heads flow amongst Reserves and
National Parks, only accessible by watercraft.
- Tours are led by a qualified guide, provide you
with a low impact, high enjoyment nature experience
along calm and sheltered waters. Abundant birdlife
can be spotted including birds of prey, waders and
kingfishers amongst the eucalypts, hoop pines and
mangroves – the nursery ground for many types
of fish.
- The colourful journeys are half day trips taking
approx. four hours. Quality stable tandem kayaks,
life jackets, paddles, bottled spring water, fresh
fruits and homemade cake are provided. The tours are
run in the morning or afternoon and transport can
be arranged.

What to Expect
Flat
water paddling suitable for novice kayakers, with
a sense of adventure, and a reasonable level of fitness.
- A relaxed, informative yet invigorating experience.
- Sessions commence with a briefing on basic paddling
skills, tour routes, safety, and care of our fragile,
local environment.
- Paddling itineraries vary according to weather
conditions, tides, client abilities and interest areas.
- Paddle along the pristine waters around Ballina
Island, exploring the mangrove forests and extending
your kayaking skills in a safe friendly environment.
- Eco tours of the Ballina environment featuring
bird and marine life, dolphins and international migratory
birds
- Refreshments in nature's parlour
- Qualified experienced guides
- Certificates are awarded to children who have participated
in the tours.
When Can you go?
- Half day trips are 3.5 hours in duration commencing
at 8.30am and 1.30pm 7 days a week.
Equipment provided
- All kayaking equipment and life vests are provided.
The 'Cabo' kayaks are strong, stable and beautifully
balanced craft with excellent handling to offer you
a pleasurable paddling experience.
Special Considerations
You Need to Bring
- Suitable footwear for getting wet (ie: rubber sandals),
sunscreen, hat, drinking water, swimmers and towel.
